Benefits of Bespoke & Custom Furniture
When working with an interior designer on a furniture package, we often recommend bespoke or custom furniture pieces for a variety of reasons. While these can be more costly upfront, the benefits often outweigh the initial investment. Keep reading to discover why bespoke or custom furniture might be worth considering for your next purchase.

Longevity & Sustainability
One of the most important parts about a bespoke or custom piece of furniture is that you’re investing in an heirloom-quality piece that will last you a lifetime. The piece is going to have longevity that basic retail products rarely have, creating less waste when a cheaply made product inevitably ends up in the landfill.
Bespoke furniture is made to stand up to wear and tear over decades. These furniture manufacturers aren’t using cheap materials and quick manufacturing techniques. They often employ artisans and craftspeople to ensure the highest quality of workmanship and pay them a livable wage. While there may come a time where a piece needs to be reupholstered or refinished, the core construction and materiality of the piece allows for these updates to be made, creating a “like-new” piece.
Unique Details
One of the things I love most about bespoke furniture is that there are really unique details that have been designed by other artists or can be dreamed up together between client and designer on custom pieces. Think unique shapes, funky hardware, hand-paintings, etc. Check out some of these amazing details below.
Exact Dimensions & Customization
The great thing about many pieces of bespoke furniture and all custom furniture is that you can typically get the exact dimensions you’re looking for. Whether that’s modifying the back height of the sofa for a taller family, lengthening one side of a sectional to fit your space better, or modifying a wood finish to match another piece of furniture, customization is a key benefit.
C.O.M.
C.O.M. stands for customers own material. With retail products, you’re typically limited to pick from the upholstery or finishes that are presented, often times with very few options. With custom pieces, the sky is the limit when it comes to textiles: patterns, colors, textures, finishes. Check out some fabrics below that I would love to upholster with on a custom piece of furniture.
I once heard a vendor say “Cry once!” in regards to spending a lot of money on an expensive piece of furniture. What she meant was, while it may feel like spending a lot of money up front, it’s likely it will save you more money and headache in the future when you have to keep re-purchasing a lounge chair from a standard retailer as the chair sags, breaks, or malfunctions in another way over time. Plus, you have the peace of mind that you’ll be keeping an heirloom-quality piece out of the landfill, supporting artisans and craftspeople, and the details of the piece will aesthetically and functionally be exactly as you hoped for!
